Soloist
Apart from competitions, the euphonium is not
often heard as a solo instrument. However its unique and varied sound
deserves to be better known.
Gilles Rocha often appears as a soloist with
many different formations. He has a broad repertoire, and is always willing
to learn new music. He enjoys highly serious programmes as well as more
light-hearted ones. He is happy to accept offers of solo appearances either
with bands or any ensemble, or with piano.
En 2007, having won the Pfister Prize he was
given the opportunity to appear as soloist in the « White Room » of the KKL.
The Pfister Prize was a competition where the winners of regional
competitions under 25 years old competed against each other during a very
intensive weekend to establish a national champion.
Gilles played Vladimir Cosma’s Euphonium
Concerto in a programme entitled Italianità, accompanied by the
Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. This 20-minute piece was very well
received by the large audience.
In January 2008, Gilles was asked to stand in
at the last minute for the international soloist Thomas Rüedi who had to
withdraw for personal reasons from a concert given by the Feldmusik Sarnen.
This was once again a triumph.
Again in 2008, he appeared as soloist with
his own band, the illustrious Brass Band 13 Etoiles.
Why not programme a euphonium concerto with
your ensemble for a change ? Gilles is open to any suggestions, and will not
fail to answer your message.
